Some Tips for Planning Your Maternity Photography Session

Lindy reached out hoping to document this time of transition while visiting family in Maine. We chatted a bit about what they like to do together and the best location for their dream backdrop for the photographs. We settled on a sandy beach and nearby lighthouse in Midcoast Maine. Being only a few minutes away from each other, going to both locations led to a diverse gallery of foggy Maine sandy beach and the idyllic rocky coast.

Maine maternity photography on film at Pemaquid Beach

We started the session at Pemaquid Beach, meeting on a cool, misty summer afternoon. Pemaquid is a gem of a location, often fairly quiet with an expansive sandy beach during the off season. It is bordered by rocky outcroppings which create a dynamic backdrop for photographs. Lindy and Aaron walked along the beach, sat up on the sand near the dunes, and ran off together towards the shore. Lindy even waded into the water towards the end of our time there. We then took a little drive to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse to document a few more moments on the rocky coast and grass with the iconic lighthouse in the background.

Tips for candid, natural maternity photographs

Making natural feeling maternity photographs can be tricky, especially when you are outdoors not in your own home. It can feel like we need to create an exact photograph through posing, but really we are just trying to make space for your everyday dynamic and love language to come through. Here are a few tips for maternity photographs that don’t involve posing or performance for the camera:

  • Keep it simple: take a little walk, or sit side by side

  • Incorporate movement

  • Wear clothing that incorporates texture, movement, and (most importantly) feels like you

  • Focus on connection

  • Select a location where you are most comfortable - if not at-home, a place where you feel at ease
