Inspiration for Private, Anonymous Family Photography that Protects your Child’s Identity
Given the growing unease associated with AI, child’s safety online, and the political leanings of the billionaires that control social media, it is no wonder some parents choose not to show their kids faces on the internet. As a family photographer, I completely respect your wishes around the online use of your photographs. I have also heard from parents that they do want photographs they can share on social media with friends and family, but that they want their child’s face to still remain private. Whatever your particular stance, you can still have a diversity of family photographs that are unique to your family, while remaining firm on your values. Below, I am offering inspiration and ideas for family photographs that keep children’s faces anonymous for those wanting to share a bit of their life without fully revealing their child’s identity.
Tip #1: hugs & cuddles with faces turned inwards
This is pretty simple and often comes natural during a session anyways! Focus on the things you already do - like cuddles or hugs - to have your child turn away from the camera.
Tip #2 Use light to illuminate and conceal
When there is harsh light, you can play around by moving your faces into and out of the light to illuminate or conceal.
Tip #3 Focus on activities and play
Plenty of activities and interactions can have your kids faces turned away from the camera. Whether it’s as they chase you or simply explore their environment, those anonymous photographs can come naturally.
Tip #4 Make it intentional
Sometimes I’ll just ask kids to cover their faces, or have them sip their cocoa, or hold their book in front of their face. But if you have really little ones who may not do this when told, I often find if they just lay in the sun they may cover their eyes instinctively.
Tip #5 Walk away
This one is pretty self explanatory and often comes naturally between activities during the session.
